Do you need to earn your GED, Adult High School Diploma, or learn English as a second languare? Maybe you already have a diploma and just need to improve your reading, writing and math skills so you can:

  • get a better job.
  • enroll in college.
  • help children or grandchildren with schoolwork.

If so, JSCC can help! We have free classes throughout Duplin County just for you. Enrolling is easy. Just attend a two day orientation, that's offered day or at night. See you in class soon!

BASIC SKILLS FACTS

  • 1.4 million adults - 30% of NC's adults - have no diploma
  • 50% of NC's adult population performs below average in information processing skills
  • 75% of unemployed adults have reading, writing, or math difficulties
  • 50% of adults on welfare do not have a diploma or GED
  • In summary, 40 million adults nationwide need to improve their basic skills, until then, adults cannot effectively compete for today's jobs!

HOW DOES BASIC SKILLS HELP ADULTS?

  • By teaching critical employability skills, communication, and computer literacy
  • By teaching English as a second language
  • By offering GED & Adult High School Diploma (AHS) programs
  • By offering all adults, even those who already have a diploma, extensive review to improve reading, writing, math, and critical thinking skills
GED PREPARATION CLASSES ( GED)
The GED program is designed for persons 18 or older who have not graduated from high school and function at or above the 9th grade reading level.  Students receive individualized instruction to prepare for the five areas of the GED exam. Persons who pass the GED test will receive a high school equivalency diploma. Sixteen and seventeen-year-olds may enroll in the Basic Skills Program with special permission. ADULT HIGH SCHOOL (AHS)
AHS classes, are quality, competency-based courses which prepare adults for higher education or for the workforce. WCC's AHS program offers more than 30 interesting and challenging classes including such courses as English, NC History, Environmental Studies, and even Career Explorations to name a few!
 
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION CLASSES ( ABE)
Do you know someone who cannot read or who needs to brush up on basic skills? JSCC has the perfect solution. The Adult Basic Education program is designed for persons 18 or older who function below the 9th grade  level. Students receive individualized instruction in basic math, language, and reading.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
The ESL program is designed for adult students whose native language is not English. Instruction focuses on English skills which will enable students to interact effectively in the community and at the workplace.

COMPENSATORY EDUCATION PROGRAM (COMP ED)
Compensatory Education is a community college program designed for adults with mental disabilities or traumatic brain injury.  The goals of the program are to help individuals acquire basic skills and abilities needed to become more independent and self-directed and to meet and manage community, social, work and personal adult responsibilities.
