Medical Assisting
Associate in Applied Science (AAS)

 

The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares multi-skilled health care professionals qualified to perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory procedures. Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, medical transcription, computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration, and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.

Graduates of CAAHEP accredited medical assisting programs may be eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants' Certification Examination to become Certified Medical Assistants. Employment opportunities include physicians' offices, health maintenance organizations, health departments, and hospitals.

The James Sprunt Community College Medical Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), on recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants’ Endowments (AAMAE). Individuals desiring a career in medical assisting should take biology, mathematics and keyboarding/computer courses prior to entering the program.

In order to be considered for admission into the Medical Assisting program, the application must be on file, and all criteria met by February 1st of each year for consideration for the following fall semester.

To apply for the Medical Assisting Program download, review and complete the Medical Assisting Program Application Packet and return the packet to the Health Education Department at James Sprunt Community College.
