The James Sprunt Community College Leadership Academy
In 2004, Dr. Lawrence L. Rouse, JSCC President realized that many of the employees of the college were near or at retirement age. He had the vision of a Leadership Academy that would train employees of the college, both faculty and staff, to take these positions. It was a “grow your own” mentality. After much hard work and dedication to the purpose, the first JSCC Leadership Academy was placed into action in the fall of 2005.
Each year in the Fall Semester, letters of invitation to apply and applications go out to all JSCC faculty and staff that have not been a part of the Leadership Academy. For those that apply, there is a Selection Committee that meets and selects the next class of participants. The Committee consists of member of the other Leadership Academy classes, 2 JSCC Deans and the president of the college.
The Leadership Academy is slotted for only 10 participants. The Leadership Academy sessions usually last for 6 to 8 hours (1 day) and meet for 1 day per month. To discuss the North Carolina Community College (NCCCS) budget process. The Academy takes an overnight trip to the North Carolina State Capital and the Community College System Office. The Academy also visits an urban community college site.
