The Debra S. Morrisey Leadership Challenge

In the Spring of 1994 James Sprunt Community College (JSCC) began sponsoring a Student/Community Leadership Training Program.  This program  enhances the leadership skills of students and community representatives.

In the Fall of 2008, Dr. Lawrence Rouse, JSCC President renamed the Student/Community Leadership Training Program the Debra S. Morrisey Leadership Challenge in recognition and honor of the former Dean of Student Services’ commitment to education and leadership, dedicated service to the mission of JSCC, unwavering support of the student body and Duplin County at large.  During the past 14 years there have been 175 graduates of the program.  These graduates have been JSCC students, community members-at-large and staff/faculty of the college.

The program is designed to develop the participant’s leadership skills related to: Personal Power & Leadership; Leadership and Working with groups; Leadership and Conflict; Networking and Leadership; and Public Policy and Leadership Education.

The Debra S. Morrisey Leadership Challenge program  consist of six (6) sessions:

1•                  Self Awareness & Leadership

2•                 Beyond Awareness:  Communication

3•                 Appreciation of Diversity

4•                 Making a Difference in the Community

5•                 Effective Participant & Leadership Skills for Formal Meetings

6•                 Group Processes - Facilitation.

Because of the interest in the program, we offer the Leadership Challenge during the Spring Semester and Fall Semester of each year.  The training has been well received and has gained state and national recognition.  Most importantly, the training is free of charge to the participants.
